The Story Behind It All

Why Eye Can Be Exists

As women, we carry a legacy of resilience, wisdom, and strength. But when it comes to our health, the resources we need to thrive have been missing. That’s what I saw time and time again as a women’s health researcher—and it broke my heart.

I started Eye Can Be by sharing simple health tips—things I learned from my mom and grandma, and powerful truths from my research. The response was humbling. Women like you told me, “I finally feel like someone understands me. I trust you. You’ve helped me see what’s possible.”

That’s when I knew: This is bigger than health tips. This is about creating a space where we honor our roots while embracing what the world of science, medicine, and policy has to offer us. A space to take control of our health, rewrite our stories, and build the legacy we deserve.

Eye Can Be is that space. For you, for your daughters, and for every generation to come.

Meet the Founder

I am Zakirah L. Abdul-Hameed. My parents like to say I came out of the womb curious—fascinated with how things worked, why they worked, and, most importantly, how I could make them better. But more than that, I’ve always had a heart for caregiving. From helping the children in my family to supporting pregnant women and elders, I’ve always been drawn to nurturing others.

Growing up in a family rooted in community, health, and wellness, I knew my purpose early on. In high school, I dove into shadowing physicians and pharmacists, and when I wasn’t doing that, I was in the science lab. By 16, I started college and earned two degrees—one in sociology and another in public health. That’s when I began my research journey, focusing on reproductive justice and maternal and child health equity.

At Morehouse School of Medicine, where I completed my Master’s in Public Health, my passion only deepened. I partnered with organizations like the American Cancer Society, researching women’s cancer health equity, reproductive health, and maternal health. Along the way, I was blessed with an amazing mentor who believed in me and opportunities to travel the country, sharing data from my lab— inspired by my family’s remedies and my determination to make a difference.

I created Eye Can Be because I believe women deserve health resources that honor both our roots and our futures. This is our space to learn, heal, and thrive—together.
